Rules & policies
Know before you shoot.
These rules exist to keep every member and guest safe. All members are responsible for knowing and following them — and for ensuring their guests do the same. Questions? Contact a Board member.
01 · Facility Use
Access & gate
- Members access the property using their 5-digit PIN followed by the * key.
- Do NOT tailgate through the gate. Each vehicle must enter its own PIN.
- Gate malfunction? Call 507-315-9626.
- Your PIN is personal — do not share it with guests. Escort guests through the gate yourself.
- Membership is per household. Only members listed on your membership may use the facilities.
General conduct
- All members and guests are expected to conduct themselves in a safe, courteous, and responsible manner at all times.
- Alcohol is not permitted on the ranges or during any shooting activity.
- No hunting on club property except during the Board-authorized small game hunt (January–February).
- Respect all posted signs and any instructions from Range Captains or Board members.
- Clean up after yourself — brass, hulls, targets, and trash. Leave the range cleaner than you found it.
- Vehicles must remain on established roads and parking areas.
Range hours
- Ranges are open year-round during daylight hours unless posted otherwise.
- The club calendar will note any temporary range closures for events or maintenance.
- Night shooting is not permitted.
02 · General Shooting Safety
Range commands
- CEASE FIRE — Immediately stop shooting, unload, open the action, and step back from the bench. Wait for the range to be declared safe.
- RANGE IS HOT — Shooting may commence. All personnel must be behind the firing line.
- RANGE IS COLD — No shooting. You may go downrange to check or change targets. All firearms must be unloaded with actions open.
- Never go downrange or allow others to go downrange while the range is hot.
Firearm handling
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded at all times.
- Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have made the decision to shoot.
- Know your target and what is beyond it.
- Firearms must remain unloaded and actions open until you are at the firing line and the range is declared hot.
- When moving between ranges, firearms must be unloaded, cased, or carried with the action open.
Required safety equipment
- Eye protection is required on all ranges while shooting or observing.
- Hearing protection is required on all ranges while shooting or observing.
- Shooters age 16 and under must show a valid Firearm Safety Certificate.
03 · Rifle Range
Range overview
- The BSCC rifle range extends to 300 yards with six covered shooting benches.
- Steel gong targets are provided at various distances. Paper targets may be placed on the target frames.
- The range is rated for centerfire rifle cartridges.
Permitted & prohibited
- Rifles, pistols, and shotgun slugs are permitted on the rifle range.
- Full-auto fire is not permitted.
- Tracer, incendiary, armor-piercing, and explosive ammunition is strictly prohibited.
- Shoot only at approved targets on the berms or target frames. No shooting at the ground, berms' faces, or range equipment.
- Do not shoot the gong stands, chains, or hardware — aim for the face of the gong only.
Target placement
- Paper targets must be placed on the provided frames. Do not attach targets to the berm, posts, or wooden supports.
- Remove all targets and staples when you are finished.
- Glass, cans, and non-approved targets are not permitted on the rifle range.
04 · Archery Range
Range overview
- The archery range is located approximately half a mile west of the clubhouse.
- The range features a 20-foot elevated tower platform and 3D animal targets spread across the property.
- The range is open to members and supervised guests year-round.
Rules
- Crossbows are not permitted on the archery range.
- Shoot only at designated archery targets — do not shoot at trees, stumps, range equipment, or wildlife.
- Youth must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible adult at all times.
- Retrieve arrows carefully. Look both ways before going downrange.
- Do not shoot from the tower platform when other archers are on the range below, unless the shot is clearly directed away from other archers.
- Report damaged or missing 3D targets to a Board member.
05 · Guest Policy
Bringing guests
- Members may bring guests to the club for range use. The sponsoring member must remain present with their guest at all times.
- Guests must sign the BSCC guest waiver before using any range or facility.
- Guests are the full responsibility of the sponsoring member.
- A member may not bring the same guest more than three times per calendar year. Frequent visitors should be encouraged to apply for membership.
Guest conduct
- Guests must follow all club rules and comply with any instructions from Range Captains or Board members.
- If a guest violates club rules, the sponsoring member and guest may both be asked to leave.
- Non-member guests are not permitted to use the facility without a sponsoring member present.
Youth guests
- Minors must always be accompanied and directly supervised by a responsible adult (member or guest 18+).
- Minors shooting on the ranges must have completed the Minnesota Firearm Safety Program or be under the direct hands-on supervision of an adult.
- Parental/guardian waivers are required for minors participating in club activities.
06 · Sporting Clays
Schedule & participation
- Sporting Clays are open to members and the public every Thursday evening, May through mid-September. Show up between 4:30 and 6:00 PM.
- Selected Sunday afternoon shoots are held through the winter — check the calendar for dates.
- Shooters are assigned to a squad of 4–6 people by the Range Captain.
- New shooters should identify themselves to the Range Captain to be placed with experienced shooters.
Costs
- BSCC members: $12.00 per round (50 clays).
- Non-members: $15.00 per round.
- Youth 17 and under, or participants in high school trap or youth shooting programs: $7.00.
- Shooters age 16 and under must show a valid Firearm Safety Certificate.
What to bring
- Hearing protection and eye protection (safety glasses or sunglasses) are required.
- Your shotgun and at least 50 rounds of ammunition (bring a few extras for misfires).
- A shooting vest or ammunition bag to carry your shells and gather spent hulls.
- Shot size #7½ or #8 is recommended. Steel shot and slugs are not permitted on the sporting clays course.
Course rules
- The 10-station walking course layout changes weekly.
- Shoot only from the designated shooting cage at each station.
- Call for your clay before mounting the gun. Do not mount the gun before calling.
- Respect the pace of play. Keep up with your squad.
- Spent hulls must be picked up or knocked into the provided receptacles.
07 · Pistol Range
Range overview
- The pistol range is located immediately east of the rifle range.
- The range has four shooting stations at 25 yards.
- The DIY auto clay-thrower patio is adjacent to the pistol range. Targets should be thrown toward the brush south of the patio.
Permitted & prohibited
- Handguns, pistol-caliber carbines, and shotguns are permitted on the pistol range.
- Rifle-caliber firearms must be used on the rifle range, not the pistol range.
- Full-auto fire is not permitted.
- Rapid fire is permitted only when all shooters on the line are shooting simultaneously and a Range Officer is present.
- No drawing from a holster unless a Range Captain has specifically authorized a practice session.
- Steel targets are permitted at 25 yards only with frangible or lead ammunition — no jacketed or steel-core ammunition on steel targets.
Target placement
- Use the provided target stands and frames. Remove all targets and debris when finished.
- No glass, ceramic, or explosive targets.
- Targets must be placed at or behind the 10-yard minimum distance from the firing line.
Violations of these rules may result in immediate suspension of range privileges or expulsion from the club per Article VII of the BSCC Bylaws. If you witness an unsafe act, speak up immediately or notify a Range Captain or Board member. Safety is everyone's responsibility.
